From November 3 – 7, SOSV produced its fifth annual Climate Tech Summit<\/a>, which convened nearly 6,000 founders, investors, researchers, corporates, policymakers, and operators for the virtual, free events. The purpose? To provide the climate tech ecosystem an opportunity to hear directly from top investors, founders, researchers and others on how they see climate evolving in these challenging times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replays of all 24 main-stage panels from day 1<\/a> and day 2<\/a>, and 10 breakout sessions<\/a> are available now. Below is a snapshot of the themes that defined the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Market Too Big to Reverse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The summit opened with candid remarks from SOSV\u2019s Managing General Partner Sean O\u2019Sullivan<\/a>, who addressed the political environment head-on: \u201cIt\u2019s abundantly clear what the Trump administration thinks about climate tech.\u201d\u00a0But as Sean framed it, these headwinds will not derail climate tech. Powerful forces are already pushing decarbonization forward – forces driven not by subsidies or treaties, but by market forces including the hyperscalers<\/a> commitments to decarbonizing energy and construction, as well the rapid market maturation of new technologies from renewables, nuclear<\/a> and geothermal<\/a> to green cement<\/a>, eVTOLs<\/a>, and linear generators<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Sean, many of the Summit\u2019s speakers framed climate tech as a force unlikely to be derailed in the long run, starting with the exceptional opening discussion, \u201c2025 Climate Tech USA: What Just Happened?<\/strong><\/a>\u201d\u00a0As one of the panelists, Kim Zou, Founder and CEO of Sightline Climate, noted: \u201cWe tracked $26B of deployed capital in the U.S. this year. That\u2019s flat from last year, which means climate tech investment isn\u2019t actually declining.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also asked some of the industry\u2019s most influential climate tech VCs, including Chris Sacca (Lowercarbon Capital)<\/a>, Vinod Khosla (Khosla Ventures)<\/a>, and Mike Schroepfer (Gigascale Capital)<\/a>, why they continue to double down on the category. Their message: we\u2019re just getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyperscalers Are Driving the Climate Playbook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the strongest forces reshaping the landscape are hyperscalers. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have become dominant shapers of markets for steel, cement, power, cooling, transportation, and advanced materials, driven by net-zero ambitions and the explosive build-out of data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As our \u201cData Centers Energy Race<\/a>\u201d panel made clear, hyperscalers aren\u2019t acting out of virtue. They\u2019re acting because their boards demand it, their customers expect it, their employees want it, and their economics require it. For founders building technologies that improve efficiency or reliability, this is a once-in-a-generation pull from the top of the value chain. Lucia Tian, Head of Advanced Energy at Microsoft, further explained: \u201cWe\u2019re partnering aggressively with companies bringing new technology to market and modeling internally to understand what truly meets business needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market Economics Rule <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One message came through loud and clear across sessions like \u201cIs Blue the New Green?<\/a>\u201d, \u201cNew Funds in Climate<\/a>\u201d, and \u201cHello Greener Cement<\/a>\u201d: Not only is the \u201cgreen premium\u201d a fantasy in the market place, the climate tech companies that thrive have to make practical trade-offs to lock in the sound economics that win contracts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investors and founders have learned a vital lesson in the past five years. No matter how green or clever your technology, you still have to compete for real in the market. Customers aren\u2019t willing to pay the infamous \u201cgreen premium\u201d for a product, and founders can\u2019t expect to succeed if they are dependent in the long-run on tax credits, grants and other non-market supports. If decarbonization tech can\u2019t show a compelling \u201crisk-adjusted rate of return\u201d to investors, it\u2019s not going to raise money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the industry has matured past idealism with a renewed focus on economics, durability, and deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean don\u2019t swing for the fences. As Chris Sacca said, \u201cWe have some really crazy shit [in our portfolio]. If you don\u2019t try the crazy shit, you won\u2019t get to the breakthroughs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facing Up to China <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

China still dominates many of the world\u2019s energy-independence industries – a theme we explored in our session \u201c<\/em>What Can China’s \u2018Engineering State\u2019 Teach the West?<\/a>\u201d<\/em> But there are still \u201copen waters\u201d where the U.S. can compete, leveraging its technology edge in areas such as Geothermal<\/a> (where we held two panels<\/a>), Nuclear<\/a>, Fusion (a favorite for Sacca and Khosla)\u00a0 and Plasma<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing Reflections<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the summit wrapped, it was refreshing to reflect on how climate tech isn\u2019t slowing down\u2026it\u2019s evolving. <\/strong>And the community that gathered at SOSV\u2019s Climate Tech Summit is building the future, one hard-won deployment at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
