To change the physical world, hard tech founders need labs, highly specialized machinery, engineering and design support, supply chain expertise and, of course, capital. These startups typically don&#8217;t ship an MVP in a sprint, and they can\u2019t pivot in a week. That\u2019s why we call this \u201chard tech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We built SOSV&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/hax.co\/\">HAX<\/a> program and <a href=\"https:\/\/sosv.com\/sosv-hax-program-officially-opens-doors-to-its-new-hq-in-newark\/\">35,000 square-foot facility<\/a> in Newark, NJ specifically for hard tech founders. In addition to up to $550K in pre-seed funding, the program provides a unique, six-month residency that includes on-site access to multiple labs, an extensive machine shop, in-house technical experts, and remote engineering and supply chain support from HAX teams in Pune and Shenzhen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HAX helps hard tech founders iterate incredibly fast from lab to prototype to pilot to get traction with customers, establish product-market fit, and win that next round of investment.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-at-hax\">Building at HAX <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HAX&#8217;s industrial-grade workspace suits pre-seed and seed stage startups building everything from advanced robotics to new industrial chemical processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore joining HAX, we had promising technical results at the lab level, but we needed multiple fume hoods and heavy-duty power infrastructure to scale,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jon-vardner-553211b6\">Jon Vardner<\/a>, CTO and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stillbright.co\/\">Still Bright<\/a>, a copper extraction company that spun out of Columbia University. \u201cMost biotech and university labs aren&#8217;t built for startups, growing teams and scaling hard tech processes. It mirrors real-world operating conditions and will help them scale up to the pilot they\u2019re currently developing. \u201cThis was a major milestone and marked a major turning point for us,\u201d said Jon. \u201cIt also put us in a position to start working more closely with potential customers and raise our $18.7M seed round which we <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/07\/30\/how-a-new-jersey-startup-found-an-electrifying-way-to-slash-copper-costs\/\">announced<\/a> this July.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocooncarbon.com\/\">Cocoon Carbon<\/a>, a startup decarbonizing steel and cement, used the HAX lab to tackle a very different challenge: rapidly and safely iterating super hot processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe process we built at HAX involved very high temperature furnaces and transfer of molten steel slag at &gt;1600 degrees celsius,&#8221; said CSO and co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/williamj-knapp\/?originalSubdomain=uk\">Dr. William Knapp<\/a>. &#8220;We knew that prototyping and experimenting quickly would be key, but doing it safely above all else was the priority. The team at HAX helped us build this capability, allowing us to run multiple tests a day with our high-temperature rigs in a safe way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was key to Cocoon prototyping quickly, demonstrating proof of concept, and assembling the data for a techno-economic analysis. Cocoon <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/08\/08\/cocoon-is-making-steel-production-runoff-into-a-greener-cement-alternative\/\">raised a $5.4M round<\/a> in May 2024 after just 6 months in the HAX program. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1144\" src=\"https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20037\" style=\"width:508px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sosv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1730257064845-1536x858.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Level Zero Health co-founders demoing their prototype at TechCrunch Disrupt <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hard tech also encompasses many health categories, including medical devices, advanced diagnostics, and robotics for healthcare. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levelzerohealth.com\/\">Level Zero Health<\/a>&#8216;s founders, CTO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/irene-jia-248161155\">Irene Jia<\/a> and CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ula-rustamova\/\">Ula Rustamova<\/a>&nbsp; joined HAX in May 2024 to push the boundaries metabolic monitoring with a wearable, continuous hormone monitor &#8211; an ambitious plan that required ground-breaking chemistry as well as sophisticated hardware design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/susan-schofer-16b8756\/\">Susan Schofer<\/a>, HAX Chief Science Officer, helped the founders source key chemicals, navigate complex protocols in the chemistry lab, and review foundational experimental data. Meanwhile, the HAX engineering team worked closely with Irene to iterate quickly on device designs and refine early prototypes. In February 2025, Level Zero <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/18\/level-zero-health-banks-6-9m-to-prove-wearable-medtech-can-take-the-strain-out-of-hormone-testing\/\">closed a $6.9M round<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-meet-the-hax-experts\"><strong>Meet the HAX Experts <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The founders of <a href=\"https:\/\/princetoncriticalminerals.com\/\">Princeton Critical Minerals<\/a> joined HAX with a big vision: revolutionize lithium extraction from brine ponds with superior selectivity and significant energy savings. As PhDs in environmental engineering, CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/seanzheng-pureli\">Sean Zheng<\/a> and his co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/zjasonren\/overlay\/about-this-profile\/\">Z. It really impressed us that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ji-ke\/\">Ji Ke<\/a>, HAX\u2019s CTO, had previously led design and electrical engineering at several startups. And second, the team consists of engineers who we were able to utilize for free as part of the HAX program, meaning we didn\u2019t have to commit to the&nbsp;overhead of hiring full-time engineers ourselves. That  engineering firepower and flexibility was exactly what we needed in the early days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Princeton Critical Minerals team built their first lithium-extraction prototype, named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pureli.com\/#lilypad\">LilyPad<\/a>, at HAX. The frisbee-sized device extracts lithium while floating in brine ponds. The brine runs over a specially coated surface that separates lithium from other components. As the concept took shape, the team ran into a practical problem: How could they recover the LilyPads once they were out on the pond?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joeoliveira1044\/\">Joe Oliveira<\/a>, the HAX workshop manager, helped us brainstorm a recovery system,&#8221; said Sean. &#8220;In the spirit of fast, scrappy testing, we duct-taped Nerf bullets to form a barrier in a bucket of water. That evolved into tests in a larger sink and then a pool in the HAX basement. Each one of these steps helped us validate the concept and quickly improve the design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe, an industrial designer who you may have spotted in HAX&#8217;s recent \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7335983712506929152\">Machines of HAX<\/a>\u201d video, plays a key role in making the HAX workshop deliver for the founders. He\u2019s joined by expert mechatronics engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marcrose18\/\">Marc Rose<\/a> and chemical lab manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/toshi-akashige-22563034a\/\">Toshi Akashige<\/a> (featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Axyh50q0Mpc?si=22PvTxQUjwLuzkqY\">this great video<\/a>) who earned his PhD in chemical engineering at NYU.
